Audi Grandsphere – the future through Audi’s lense

The Future through Audi’s Lense

First seen at the IAA 2021, Audi Grandsphere paints the future that Audi has envisioned. The future where the drive system and handling are no longer at the top of the design specifications. That’s also what the “sphere” in its name refers to, as this car looks nothing like a traditional sedan. This is one of the three concept cars they presented, and the other two go by the names Audi Skysphere and Audi Urbansphere.

The lines of the car are sharp and innovative, and it looks as though this car can just glide through the air. The Audi Grandsphere concept’s dimensions indicate this sedan as an unmistakable example of the luxury class automobile, measuring 5.35 m (17.6 ft.) long, 2 m (6.6 ft.) wide, and 1.39 m (4.6 ft.) high. The 3.19 m (10.5 ft.) wheelbase denotes excellent value and supreme spaciousness.

After that, there’s a Level 4 autonomy allowing you to incorporate in other activities while the car takes you to wished destination. But here’s the cool part: when turned on, this mode pushes the interior dashboard back into the car, generating a spacious spheric interior without a steering wheel or pedals. Why buy a jet, when you can enjoy the experience of this car?

When entering the vehicle, no buttons or black driver/infotainment screens will ruin the premium feel of this vehicle. There are screens, but they are projected onto the wooden surfaces underneath the windscreen. They are either dispersed over the whole width of the cabin or divided for the driver and front-seat passenger, depending on the driving condition – whether manual with a steering wheel or Level 4. All of the information needed for travel is available in high quality and is easily legible.

The 800-volt charging technology lies at the heart of the driving system. Similar to Audi e-tron GT, the battery technology will offer rapid charging speeds. The 120 kWh battery can be charged from 5% to 80% in less than 25 minutes. The Audi Grandsphere concept is unquestionably appropriate for long journeys, with a range of more than 750 kilometers (466 miles) — depending on the motor system and power output chosen.

CEO Markus Duesmann on Audi’s sustainable premium transformation

Markus has a very open and optimistic attitude towards the coming years and the development of Audi. In a recent interview, he shared the vision of the company and gave us more insight as to what can be expected from some of our favorite car brands. Some takeaways:

  • “In just twelve years’ time, Audi will be completely electric – an ambitious goal that makes us the industry pioneer. By pursuing such a decisive and robust roadmap, Audi’s transformation is rapidly overtaking the planned legal regulations. We are more than ready.”
  • “Our strategic ambition is to deliver 3 million cars per year by 2030. This goal is very ambitious, but in light of the market forecasts and our attractive product portfolio it’s possible.”
  • “At the same time, profitability is key. Recent quarters have proven that Audi can generate high returns within our strategic target range of 9 to 11 percent. And with growing Group synergies, a sustainable return of 11 percent is definitely realistic for us in the long term.”
  • “Many people who have worked for years in certain areas at Audi are starting to wonder what their employment will look like going forward. First, I can confirm that they are guaranteed a job until 2029. Second, we have set aside half a billion euros for training across new roles. We are offering our employees in-depth transformation training to make sure they are prepared for changes to their roles, or even to take on a totally new position. This is particularly relevant for digitalization and electromobility.
