Cupra Born -a sophisticated hatchback with a sporty soul

CUPRA’s first all-electric vehicle

Cupra is a newly formed brand that manufactures progressive and performance-driven vehicles. In 2018 SEAT created the Cupra brand as its independent high-performance branch and SEAT Sport was officially replaced by Cupra Racing.

Cupra Born

Cupra Born – first appearances

Cupra Born is a hatchback C-segment (per European standards) electric car sold by SEAT through its Cupra sub-brand. It was first presented at Geneva Motor Show in March 2019 under the name SEAT el-Born. Since then, there have been some major changes. The production of this vehicle was confirmed in July 2020. The renaming to Cupra Born happened in February of this year, and the feedback from the fanbase was positive. SEAT is owned by The Volkswagen Group, and Born is based on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform. This platform’s architecture aims to consolidate electronic controls and minimize the number of microprocessors, promote the use of new driver-assistance technologies, and change the way automobiles are manufactured in some ways. The vehicle is manufactured in the same plant in Zwickau, Germany, where the Volkswagen ID.3 is.

The official names haven’t been released yet, these model names have been used as a way of easier categorizing

Most of the details can be found in the table above. There will be three variants of this electric car, with different battery capacities and powertrains. Cupra claims fast charging of up to 125kW, taking the car 35 minutes to charge from 5% to 80%. On an 11kW home unit, it will take a little over 6 hours to charge. The top speed of the car is 180km/h, and it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Technically, it is very close to Volkswagen ID.3. But visually, it’s a whole other world.

The Born is essentially identical in size to the MEB-based ID 3, being 4322mm long, 1809mm wide, and 1537mm height, with a 2767mm wheelbase. Sharp LED headlights and a pointed front end, which Cupra compares to a shark’s nose, distinguish it as the more blatantly performance-oriented model. Cargo capacity is also the same as its rival, at 385 liters.

The interior consists of a blend of recycled materials, featuring one driver’s display and one 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. The interior is sharp, the steering wheel is elegant and it includes Drive Profile Selection and CUPRA mode buttons. The car features “Hola, Hola” Voice Recognition System, and it can be unlocked through a phone app. The only drawback is the weird “touch-type” buttons, located under the main infotainment screen, that are used for climate control settings.

Some of the safety features include

  • Top View Camera: complete visibility when parking with a 360 view of your Born on the 12-inch touchscreen
  • Pre-crash Assist: automatically tightens seatbelts, closes windows, and deploys the airbags in the event of a collision
  • Exit Assist: when you open your door to leave the car, Exit Warning will tell you if it detects approaching hazards
  • Turning Assist and Evasive Steering Assist: it identifies items in front of your vehicle, such as people, and assists you in steering around them to avoid a collision. It also aids in straightening your vehicle in the opposite lane after swerving around the person
  • Rear Traffic Assist: self-explanatory

“The Cupra Born’s design is multi-faceted. It sharpens the Cupra look while at the same time incorporating the modernity of its advanced electric powertrain. It delivers a strong Cupra character that expresses agility and performance with its mix of flowing surfaces and technical details.” – Cupra design director Jorge Díez

Cupra Born Price and Release Date

The expected price for this car is going to be around $43,990, similar to a higher spec Volkswagen ID.3. The vehicle is in production, and it should be available sometime in Q1 2022.

For people looking for a hatchback solely as a means of transportation, Volkswagen ID.3 will be just fine. But when it comes to the ones looking for a style, a salient exterior with two-color combinations and an interior that just feels nice, look no further than Cupra Born.
