Overview
This week, on the 6th of September, Renault unveiled its first details of the new Megane, including estimated range, 0 to 100km/h acceleration, and some photos. Renault is proud of its EV advancements, as the company’s CEO announced that all their electric vehicles (around 400,000) have passed more than 10 billion kilometers so far.
The car’s official name will be Renault Megane E-TECH Electric, and it will come in a couple of different options. What Renault is aiming to do with this Megane is obtain an imperium over the market of the affordable EVs. The vehicle will be manufactured at the Douai factory in the heart of ElectriCity, Europe’s leading EV hub. Besides the promised range of 470km (290 miles) according to WLTP, Megane has the largest information display in the compact car class.
“The All-new Mégane E-TECH Electric embodies the electric revolution that Renault started a decade ago. By democratizing the electric technology, New Mégane succeeds in making the electric vehicle affordable, with no compromise on efficiency and driving pleasure. What this vehicle conveys is emotion, we have created it as the GTI of electric vehicles.” – Luca de Meo, CEO Renault Group
Performance and Battery
Performance-wise, Renault Megane will come in two variants: 96 or 160 KW / 205 or 300Nm. Both of these own three-phase synchronous motors from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Why this is interesting is, because Renault is claiming that the battery for the new Megane is 10% lighter than the current motor used in Zoe. It will take Megane from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. The battery is developed by LG Energy Solution, and it will come in two variants: 40kWh with a range of 300km (185 miles) or 60kWh for up to 470km (290 miles). The battery height of both versions is only 11 centimeters (with 195 centimeters in length, and 145 centimeters in width), and it is said to be the “slimmest battery on the market”. Also, both the battery and the electric motor will be liquid-cooled. For its recovery system, it will have a classic recuperation with a four-stage system.
Renault claims to have installed a “predictive charge management”. This is a system that takes the battery to the ideal temperature for rapid or full charging for the benefit of the charging curve. According to the company’s headquarters, it takes data from the navigation system. Furthermore, as previously stated, the model meets the technical requirements for bidirectional charging, allowing it to feed electricity back into the grid. The car might look long, or SUV-like, on images, but its length is 4.21 meters.
Just like the brand, the Renault design is changing and becoming more ‘tech’. While keeping all the sensual features that are behind the car’s recent success, it also incorporates some more technological elements (rear micro-optical LED lights, OpenR screen) as well as others that draw heavily on the world of high-tech and hi-fi design (vents grilles, laser engraving on lower door protection grates decorations). Interior and Technology
According to the manufacturer, 95% of the vehicle are recyclable at the end of their life cycle. Inside, a total of 27 kilograms of parts are made from recycled plastic. That includes the seat covers. This is another point for sustainability for Renault Megane. When it comes to the infotainment system, this car comes with a 12.3-inch dashboard screen and a 12-inch multimedia screen, on a higher package. The lower one will have a 9-inch multimedia screen. Ambient lighting will also be included in higher package options, as well as a high level of insulation for perfect sound quality. A multimedia system OpenR Link allows the car to integrate seamlessly with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Besides that, it will also include the “Google Assistant” that responds to voice commands. Along with that, users will have at their disposal 26 advanced assistance systems. Some of these include adaptive cruise control, lane departure, blind-spot detection and so on.
With this model, Renault is also pushing their new, re-designed logo, which will become standard in the future. In our opinion, it looks clean, and it still holds the originality and the heart of its reputation.
