Mercedes Vision EQXX – redefining what EV stands for

Mercedes as the industry leader

Besides the proud luxury component that all Mercedes vehicles have in common, the German carmaker has been able to set some EV industry standards in the past, and it will continue to do so. Mercedes EQS 450+ had shown a range of 422 miles in a recent Edmunds test, taking the number one spot in the “range” category. The battery chemists crammed the energy of the EQS into the dimensions of a tiny automobile thanks to some specialist engineering. The battery pack in the Mercedes VISION EQXX contains around 100 kWh of energy while taking up half the space and being 30% lighter than the existing benchmark unit in the EQS.

In their press release, the company talks about their vision of the EQXX, and that vision involves long road trips that create fun stories and better social bonding. In a culture where almost every form of interaction has been digitalized, we can appreciate what Mercedes is hoping to achieve. Do not worry about the range, you’ll have plenty of it. Do not fear the road on your way to the destination – Mercedes Vision EQXX will come with an updated map and a plethora of safety features that will make sure you get to your destination without any hiccups.

Some hard facts about the car that Mercedes made public:

  • up to 100kWh of usable battery energy
  • a drag coefficient of only 0.17
  • max power output 150 kW
  • 2,800 mm wheelbase combined with a total weight of 1,750 kg

The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX is how we imagine the future of electric cars. Just one-and-a-half years ago, we started this project leading to the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built – with an outstanding energy consumption of less than 10 kWh per 100 kilometers. It has a range of more than 1,000 kilometres2 on a single charge using a battery that would fit even into a compact vehicle. The VISION EQXX is an advanced car in so many dimensions – and it even looks stunning and futuristic. With that, it underlines where our entire company is headed: We will build the world’s most desirable electric cars.”

– Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG

Features of the Mercedes Vision EQXX

With a combination of innovative technology and exceptional cooperation, the EQXX is jam-packed with efficiency advancements that push the edge. The end result will be a road-legal research prototype that provides a longer range with less energy, tangible luxury and convenience with less environmental effect, and more electric mobility with less waste. More cars were supplied in less time thanks to a slew of digital technologies and a software-driven strategy.

For extended range, ultra-low-rolling-resistance tires with optimized aerodynamic shape combine with lightweight magnesium wheels.
The battery system is fed by ultra-thin roof panels for an extended range of up to 25 kilometers.

Efficiency engineering efforts across the board resulted in astonishing energy usage of less than 10 kWh per 100 km (efficiency of more than 6 miles per kWh).
The inside of the Mercedes Vision EQXX is made up of a combination of recycled and plant-based materials, reducing waste and lowering carbon emissions.
