New VW ID – under $20,000 for an electric vehicle

We’ve already written about some of the technologies unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich. But we cannot forget about the bad boy VW has been talking about. In today’s article, we’ll touch on a VW ID Life electric car concept that the german automaker presented.

Since the massive success of sedans and SUV sales, big companies are targeting a new market: affordable electric cars. Tesla revealed its visions earlier for a new, cheaper tesla. Now Volkswagen is following up, with their own vision of a small BEV. The cost, before taxes, will be in a range between $19,000 and $21,000, and below you can find some renders of the vehicle. The power and range have also been discussed, albeit mildly. The car is currently designed to have a front-wheel-drive 172kWh motor with a 57kWh battery. Per WLTP, this battery should be enough to give this car a range of up to 400km. This is partly due to its lightness.

“In creating the ID. LIFE, we have consistently focused on the needs of younger customers. We believe that, even more so than today, the car of the future will be about lifestyle and personal expression. The customer of tomorrow won’t simply want to get from A to B; they will be much more interested in the experiences that a car can offer. The ID. LIFE is our answer to this.”

– Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand

VW ID Life looks plastic-like in both the interior and exterior. That is primarily due to the recyclable materials that this car is made from. Also, Volkswagen is going for that minimalistic look, something that Tesla has been doing for some time.

Volkswagen also announced that the car will come with a video game console and projector, as well as a projection screen that extends from the dash panel (with their official image below).

Is this feature something that the carmakers should go for, or is it overkill?
