According to William Li, the company’s founder and CEO, NIO’s ambition to install 400 battery swap stations by 2023, revealed at NIO Day late last year, is far from sufficient.
Nio is a pioneer, as well as the leader when talking about electric vehicle battery swapping stations. The Chinese beast recently shared its goals for the year 2023. They will speed up the development of EV battery swap stations so that more consumers may benefit from battery switch services that are more convenient than refueling.
“We have set a new goal of adding 1,000 battery swap stations in 2023, for a cumulative total of more than 2,300 stations by the end of 2023,” – Li shared in a post on the NIO App.
Some 400 of the 1,000 new stations will be positioned in highway service zones or near highway entrances and exits. The remaining 600 sites will be located in metropolitan areas. According to Li, NIO will also increase its efforts to develop the facility in third- and fourth-tier cities and counties with a specified number of customers but no battery swap stations.
NIO’s third-generation battery swap station production is underway, with mass production set to commence in April and battery swap station deployment to increase in May. The third-generation battery swap station boosts a single station’s daily servicing capacity to 408 times, a 30% increase over the second generation.
How many NIO battery swap stations are there?
Nio has 1,294 battery exchange stations in China as of December 30, 2022. Nio started testing battery swapping stations that can provide electricity back into the grid in August 2022. Currently, there are 10 EV battery swap stations in Europe. Just before the new year, the tenth station began operations at a location in the Netherlands. The Hogenhoorn 1 parking lot in Denhollen is already home to the third Nio battery-swapping facility in the Netherlands. By the end of 2023, Nio hopes to have 120 such stations operating around the continent.
Although this move from NIO seems bold and passionate, the Chinese company has had many milestones in the past couple of months. Just recently, they celebrated the 10,000th battery swap in Europe. According to the NIO App, as of February 15, NIO has 11 swap stations in Europe, with another six set to launch soon. The charging map of the corporation offers access to 388,000 third-party charging heaps around Europe.
